Biography

Alexis Hutchinson is a versatile and expressive alto soloist, with a passion for both early and contemporary choral music. Originally from Worcester, she began her musical journey as Head Chorister at Worcester Cathedral. She went on to study viola at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, where she also received regular vocal tuition alongside her instrumental training.

While at Trinity Laban, Alexis held the role of Senior Choral Scholar in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel Choir. She was a regular soloist in services and concerts across London, and her work with the Chapel Choir included  live BBC Radio 3 Choral Evensong broadcasts and international tours to Malta and India. Her wider choral experience in London included performances of major symphonic works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Royal Festival Hall.

After completing her studies, Alexis returned to Worcester to take up the post of Principal Alto Lay Clerk at Worcester Cathedral—becoming the first female lay clerk in the choir’s centuries-old history. She was later appointed as Senior Lay Clerk.

Alexis is also a founder member of The Lady Clerks, a vocal ensemble made up of female lay clerks from Worcester, Gloucester, and Hereford Cathedral Choirs. The group debuted at the 2023 Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester and is committed to celebrating the music of female composers and championing women’s contributions to cathedral music.

As a soloist, Alexis has appeared with ensembles including Lichfield Cathedral Chorus, Tewkesbury Choral Society and Worcester Festival Choral Society, and maintains a wide-ranging concert repertoire that spans Baroque to modern works.
